Sheriff: Man found asleep at the wheel, charged with 4th DWI

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man was found asleep in his vehicle, with the car still on and in drive on River Road near Ben Hur early Saturday morning. Deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office say the vehicle was facing south in the northbound lanes.

The driver, 28-year-old Tanis Olliver Contreras, from San Juan, TX, admitted to drinking after he was awakened by Baton Rouge EMS. Contreras told deputies he pulled over to urinate and must have fallen asleep.

The deputy notes in the probable cause affidavit that open containers of Heineken beer bottles were in the vehicle and in plain view, along with a soft cooler with full beer bottles.

After being arrested, his Blood Alcohol Content registered at 0.140g%. The legal limit in Louisiana is .08%.

Contreras was charged with his fourth DWI, driving under suspension, open container violation, and other charges.

The affidavit notes Contreras' first three DWI charges were in Texas from 2008 until 2013. The report also states he had a hardship license.

Contreras was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where no bond has been set.
