IBERVILLE PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Operation Prescribed Justice "Refill" was in full effect Wednesday morning as the Iberville Sheriff's Office and Plaquemine Police led a joint investigation through the L.E.A.D. (Law Enforcement Against Drugs) Task Force.

Officials started around 6 a.m. with a list of 53 people they were hoping to arrest on a variety of drug charges. By the end of the day, 30 people were arrested for several different charges including cocaine, meth, synthetic marijuana and possession and distribution of drugs.

The undercover operation started after the first round-up in 2013 with agents from State Police and Drug Enforcement Administration allegedly buying from the people arrested Wednesday.

"These operations were brought in front of a Grand Jury. The indictments were brought down and this is a result of those indictments," said Plaquemine Police Asst. Chief Kenny Payne. "If you deal drugs, we're coming to get you. You don't know who you are selling it to you. You may be selling it to someone you think is an associate of yours and you're selling to an undercover agent. If you deal, we're coming."

Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said prescription pills have been a big problem for the parish, but now, they're starting to see more Heroin on the streets.

"The Heroin coming into our communities, we have to do what we can. It's 10 times stronger, 100 times stronger than the previous Heroin we had and it's so much more pure," said Stassi.

Stassi said synthetic marijuana is another big drug they see a lot of in Iberville parish. With 30 people arrested, Payne said his goal is to reduce violent crime in Plaquemine.

"Most of the violent crime that we have is a result of some disagreement in regards to a drug operation," said Payne. "Probably 85% of the crime in city limits of Plaquemine is a result of narcotics sales and narcotics use."

Those who were not arrested on Wednesday will be arrested in the coming days according to officials.

This is the second such drug round-up in Iberville Parish in the past 18 months.
