BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Construction on the new Onyx Apartments in downtown Baton Rouge is officially underway.

Several leaders, including Mayor Kip Holden, were on hand Monday morning to celebrate the groundbreaking. The new apartments will be located on Third Street, right next to Lucy's.

In addition to offering fast internet and smart home technology, the builders say they are filling a void downtown.

"So much energy going on downtown and so many people wanting to come down here and live and now, we're just starting to create that opportunity for them and these apartments are going to be fantastic," Tina Rance with Commercial Properties Realty Trust said.

The five-story building will reportedly feature nearly 30 one and two-bedroom apartments.

Construction is expected to be complete by the fall of 2015.
