BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - AmeriCorps celebrated 20 years Friday by swearing in more than 300 members and alumni in Louisiana.
Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne led the members through the process and Mayor Kip Holden welcomed members serving in the Louisiana area.
AmeriCorps volunteers assist in a number of ways including strengthening education as well as helping veterans and military families.
"I want to help somebody, you know, especially with the kids," said Arnelle Mitchell, an AmeriCorps volunteer. "Help them through bad situations that I've gone through and other people have gone through."
AmeriCorps volunteers have served more than seven million hours in Louisiana since 1994, resulting in an economic impact of more than $150 million dollars.
