Participation up in Summer Food service program

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - More students were fed this year in the East Baton Rouge Parish Summer Food Service program. Officials say participation increased by 26.8 percent  in the program which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The program offers free meals to any East Baton Rouge Parish resident who is 18 years old or younger through three local school systems and the Big Buddy Program.

The Big Buddy Program's participation increased more than fives times.  The Baker School System meals lncreased from more than 4,000 meals to more than 11,000 meals.

Gail Grover, the mayor's assistant chief administrative officer, attributed the increase to collaborative efforts between the mayor's office and participating partners. The meetings began last Spring.
