BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Firefighters have not yet determined what started the fire that destroyed a home early Monday morning while the family living there was away.
The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported it happened on Sumrall Drive around 4 a.m. According to Curt Monte with BRFD, the home's alarm company contacted the fire department about a possible fire.
Monte said the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived on the scene. He added the family of four had left Sunday night to stay with relatives because the air conditioner had stopped working.
Investigators reported it is believed the fire started in the attic. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in less than 20 minutes and kept the flames from spreading to other neighboring homes.
Authorities said the family was contacted and made it back home after the fire was under control. The Red Cross was also contacted to assist the family.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
