LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - It was a less than smooth start to the 2014 football season for the Southern Jaguars as the team's buses were delayed Saturday afternoon because of issues with the NCAA.
In a move that threatened the Jaguars from even going to Lafayette or playing their season opener with the Ragin Cajuns, the players were taken off the bus on campus to make sure they were certified by the NCAA to compete in the game.
Only after that process, which delayed the team's departure nearly two hours, were they able to get on I-10 West and make their way to Cajun Field. Southern arrived after they were supposed to be in uniform and taking part in warm-ups.
The Southern University Athletic Department released the following statement about the team's travel for the game:
The 6 p.m. start was not delayed and the contest went on as scheduled.
Southern's men's basketball team was barred from NCAA post-season play last season and has since lost key team members, who have transferred to other schools without penalty, as the athletic department continues to compile data for the NCAA's academic progress rate requirements.
