Falling gas prices greet AZ motorists for Labor Day

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

More than a half-million Arizonans will hit the road for the Labor Day weekend, and despite an eighth straight week of falling gas prices, it will cost motorists more in fuel than last year.

AAA Arizona said the average price this year per gallon is $3.43.5, about 12 cents higher than last year. The good news is that the average price per gallon dropped 2 cents in the past week, the eighth straight week prices have fallen and a trend that should continue.

"It's the same story but different week: Pump prices are sliding because crude continues to trade well under $100 and there's been no disruption to supply," said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona.

"Barring a hurricane damaging refineries or escalating conflict overseas, prices should continue to slide," she said.

Tucson continues to have the lowest average price per gallon in Arizona ($3.291) while Flagstaff has the distinction of the highest average price ($3.681).

There are no major road closures for motorists over the holiday weekend, the most traveled holiday of the year.
