BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A brand new fire station will be built in Baton Rouge soon. This comes after council members voted to do so at the Metro Council meeting Wednesday.
Curt Monte with the Baton Rouge Fire Department said the project will be paid for with city money. The new station will be located on Lee Dr. near Mike Anderson's seafood restaurant. Monte said this will allow the department to better serve the community, and also save tax payers some money. BRFD was the first department in the country to receive a "class one" fire rating and they plan on keep it.
"When you have a class one rating it's a savings for citizen's pockets as far as insurance premiums," said Monte. "To keep up with the growth of the city, we have to maintain our fire stations to close to a mile ½ radius. And this station will help us do that."
Close to where the new location will be built is Caliente Mexican Craving restaurant. Cook Miguel Bermudez said a fire department as a new neighbor would be a plus for his business, as it's a popular spot among LSU students.
"To know that they're going to be safe here, not to mention adding a fire station would make it even more safe," said Bermudez.
Firefighters hope the new station will be finish by the end of 2015.
