Man struck, killed on Phoenix street

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 69-year-old man was struck and killed by a car Wednesday night, but some of the circumstances surrounding his death were puzzling police.

A motorist driving southbound on 43rd Avenue saw a body in the roadway near Crittenden Lane and swerved without hitting the man, Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

The motorist stopped to check on the person and at the same time a Toyota Camry was unable to avoid the man and ran him over. The 20-year-old driver stopped the car and stayed at the scene.

A bicycle near the victim was also damaged, and appeared to have been run over, Thompson said.

Police could only speculate whether the victim had been riding and crashed or fallen off his bicycle and was getting up when he was struck, Thompson said.

Impairment was not a factor on the part of the driver, Thompson said.

The incident is still under investigation, and police believe there might be additional witnesses who left before they could be interviewed, Thompson said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Phoenix police at 602-262-6151.

If you have information, call Phoenix police.
