FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -

More than 200 people in Coconino County have reported receiving telephone scams so far this year and authorities say they're likely more victims.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office and the Flagstaff Police Department said investigating the scams is difficult because the caller may live in a different county, use re-routed internet addresses or phone number to avoid being tracked.

Authorities have provided some examples:

  • Scammers often demand that you purchase a pre-paid money card.
  • They often use scare tactics like threatening to shut off your electricity.
  • In some cases that say you've won an award or sweepstakes and ask for a deposit to cover fees.
  • The caller may pretend to be a relative who is in jail in a foreign country and needs money.
  • Some scammers claim to be a representative of a loan or mortgage company requiring a down payment or personal information.

CCSO and Flagstaff police have the following tips to prevent becoming a victim:

  • If you get a suspicious phone call, contact the CCSO at 928-774-4523 or Flagstaff Police Department at 928-774-1414.
  • If the caller claims they represent a government agency or company, look up the agency's number to confirm the caller's story.
  • Keep your financial information to yourself.
  • Put your name on the national Do Not Call List.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
