GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Work is officially underway at the site of a future governmental complex in Ascension Parish.

The Ascension Parish Council held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning for the new $6 million facility at its future location on East Worthey Street in Gonzales.

The complex will sit on 15 acres of land where the old hospital used to stand. It will reportedly house many parish departments initially with the hopes of expansion to be home to more offices.

"This building is long overdue," said Councilman Randy Clouatre. "We have folks spread out all over the parish...ask somebody this ask somebody that..."

Parish officials said digging is currently happening at the site and the public should be able to see the heavy equipment out there.
