Public relations 'icon' Bill Michelet passes away

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Longtime public relations executive and community leader Bill Michelet passed away Monday. He was 82 years old.

Funeral arrangements have now been set. Visitation will be held at St. George Church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until noon. A funeral mass will be at noon and burial will follow at St. George.

His longtime friend, John Hightower, said Michelet had a wonderful sense of humor and he was an "icon" of public relations.

"He was always real funny from day one," Hightower said. "He was a true icon of public relations in the state of Louisiana. He mentored hundreds of people in the profession."

Hightower knew Michelet for more than 30 years and served with him on the board of the Baton Rouge Press Club.

Michelet worked in corporate and external affairs for 27 years at Bell South. He also helped establish the Public Relations Association of Louisiana (PRAL) and Public Relations Society of America chapters in Baton Rouge, as well as the Southern Public Relations Federation.

Michelet was also active in the Press Club of Baton Rouge, serving as president and treasurer. In fact, he was the treasurer for more than 30 years. He also worked as an adjunct professor at the LSU Manship School of Communication.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to PRAL for the Bill Michelet Scholarship Fund.
