Southern's track coach accepts position at Georgia

Southern University head track and field coach Brian Johnson has accepted a position as the assistant track coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Georgia.

"On behalf of the university, I'd like to express my appreciation to Coach Johnson for all he has done to rebuild the track program in the past three years," said William Broussard, SU Director of Athletics.

Johnson took over the men's and women's program in 2010 and made an immediate impact, navigating both programs through APR troubles and rebuilding the profile of the student-athletes recruited to run track at southern.

Last season, both programs finished second at the 2014 SWAC Outdoor Track and Field championships in New Orleans.

"My family and I will always be grateful for the opportunity Southern University has provided me and the university will provide us with fond memories," Johnson said.  "I am leaving this program in a very positive place. We have built a strong team that has proven the ability to compete at a national level. It was a difficult decision but, in the end, it is a good decision for me and my family."

Johnson, a former two-sport athlete at Southern, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will be the sprints and jumps coach and oversee recruiting for the University of Georgia.
