Woman dies after car is hit broadside by minivan

ST. FRANCISVILLE, LA (WAFB) - A woman was killed when a minivan slammed into the car she was driving as she tried to turn onto a highway Sunday evening, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers identified the victim as Sharon Villere, 58, of Jackson. They said the crash happened on US 61 at LA 964 near St. Francisville around 7:15 p.m.

Tpr. Jared Sandifer with LSP reported the preliminary investigation showed Villere was driving a 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage northbound on LA 964 when she tried to cross the two southbound lanes of US 61 to make a left turn onto US 61 North.

He added a 1995 Dodge Caravan driven by James Newton, 60, of Winnsboro, was headed down US 61 South at the same time and slammed into Villere's car on the driver's side.

Investigators said Villere was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. They also stated despite being properly buckled up, Newton suffered moderate injuries in the crash. He was not charged.

According to Sandifer, impairment is not suspected as a factor in the wreck, but per protocol for deadly crashes, blood samples from both drivers were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
