'Gas for Guns' Preview

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Authorities are holding a "Gas for Guns" exchange as part of their ongoing efforts to reduce the number of firearms on the streets.

The Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination (BRAVE) program is hosting the event. It will be held at the Living Faith Christian Center on Winbourne Avenue on Saturday, August 23 from 10 a.m. until noon.

BRAVE is partnering with Circle K for the program and will offer from $50 to $300 in gas coupons for each gun that qualifies. Here is a breakdown of what a person can receive:

Less than .38 caliber handgun - $50 gas certificate

.38 caliber or larger handgun - $100 gas certificate

Assault-style rifle - $300 gas certificate

Here is the proper procedure for turning in a gun:

Put the gun in the trunk of the car to take it to the location

If you don't go by car, bring the weapon in a sealed container (bag, box, bookbag, etc.)

Follow the instructions of the officers

This is the fourth time the exchange is being held in Baton Rouge. The last one yielded 71 handguns, rifles and shotguns.
