BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Police are investigating a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex that left a man dead Tuesday evening.

Family and friends identified the victim as Kedrick Ricard, 28, of Baton Rouge. They are calling the shooting a vicious act of violence. Police later confirmed the identity.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported the shooting happened at Renaissance Gateway Apartments on North Ardenwood Drive, which is just off Florida Boulevard, around 6:15 p.m. Police detained a possible suspect for questioning, but that person is not believed to be involved and was not arrested.

Relatives said the father of six was dropping off baby supplies to the mother of his 8-month-old child when he was shot. They added a man was arguing loudly with a woman and asked Ricard if he had a problem. They also said the man then followed Ricard and shot him from behind several times.

“In the broad open of the daytime for someone to just take a good father away from their children, it's just sad," a family friend said. "It's pitiful. It's pitiful. I could never ever say he was a bad person. He wasn't an out person. He wasn't a violent person. He was a hard working young man.”

Investigators said the victim was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The investigation into the deadly shooting is ongoing.

Thanksgiving is about sharing, so we want to share something with you. In 1978, CBS news' "On The Road" segment was hosted by Charles Kuralt. He found a family of 11 in Prairie, Mississippi, all coming home for Thanksgiving. All nine children had memories of a sharecropper's cabin and nothing to wear and nothing to eat. All nine are college graduates.
