CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The city of Cincinnati began installation of Red Bike this week, a new bike share program that will offer a greener transportation system through downtown, Over-the-Rhine and Uptown.

The first Red Bike station was installed Tuesday on Fountain Square. Other stations popping up this week include Cincinnati City Hall, Aronoff Center, Great American Ball Park, National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Sawyer Point, Duke Energy Convention Center and Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati.

A total of 35 stations with 260 bikes will emerge throughout the month of August, city officials said.

Riders will be able to purchase a 24-hour day pass for $6 or an annual membership. The $6 day pass will enable riders to use Red Bikes for 24 hours, however each individual bike has a 30-minute limit.

The annual membership rate has not been finalized and will be announced once the program officially launches in mid-September, said spokesperson Jacki Reau of Game Day Communications.

"It provides an option for residents, especially college students, to travel around the urban core more easily without having to worry about things like finding parking and buying gas," said Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley. "But it also allows visitors to Cincinnati to explore the city and see many of our attractions from a new perspective."

Cranley became the first annual member, stating the program will "add to the urban vitality of the city."

"Bike share is all about getting from where you are to where you need to be in the easiest and most fun way possible," said Jason Baron, executive director of Red Bike.

Phase II of the bike share program in Northern Kentucky could potentially launch in 2015, city officials added.

Watch FOX19 NOW Live Thursday morning for an up-close look at the Red Bike stations.
