Smyrna boy drowns at Rutherford County birthday party

SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -

A 4-year-old boy was killed in a fatal drowning in Rutherford County on Saturday.

Officials said Evan Sayvone of Smyrna drowned during a family birthday party.

Detective Lt. Todd Sparks with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said Sayvone apparently slipped outside during the party, got around the pool's decking and gate, and entered the water. Another child discovered him in the water.

"He had been in there probably several minutes," Sparks said.

Nurse practitioner Elizabeth Synthavong, who was at the party, tried to revive the boy with CPR. Sayvone was transported to St. Thomas Hospital.

"It was just a horrible accident," Sparks said.
