BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The new school year begins Monday morning in East Baton Rouge Parish, which is Louisiana's third largest district.

The parish public school system will feature some new classes this year, which means a few big changes for parents and students.

Chelsea Schilling and her friends made the final touches on Schilling's newly-renovated sixth grade English classroom at Brookstown Middle Magnet School. It's just a small part of some major additions and changes for the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

"We are very excited," said Keith Bromery, EBR schools director of communications. "Everybody is excited about the start of a new school year."

Along with the opening of Brookstown Magnet, the system is expanding its foreign language immersion program at schools like Polk Elementary. According to Bromery, the curriculum gives parents and students more options.

"It really provides something that attracts kids and keeps them interested and keeps them engaged, along with the regular studies," Bromery explained.

State Rep. Ted James, D-Baton Rouge, and a number of businesses teamed up to hand out school supplies and uniforms to families in need. The group also provided new haircuts to students. James said it's an effort that goes a long way to help students be prepared for the new school year.

"In order for our school system to continue to grow, we need - number one, strong people inside schools - but we need strong community support," James said. "This shows how our community supports our school system. And that's why everyone is here to make sure kids have the tools they need to be successful."

Bromery said growth and improvement have been the calling card for the district the last several years.

"We have seen incremental student academic performance improvement over the past seven years. We have seen the number of 'F' schools drop. We have seen the number of 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' 'D' schools increase. That's the kind of thing you want to see over time," Bromery added.

East Feliciana, Iberville, Point Coupee and West Baton Rouge parishes also head back to class Monday.

Drivers will need to be ready for the start of the new school year with law enforcement agencies promising to be out to strictly enforce school speed zone laws.
