SACRAMENTO, CA (KOVR/CNN) - Three dogs are dead and another is in serious condition after being left in a car for more than two hours during a hot day on Friday.
A passerby spotted the dogs in a car at an apartment complex and contacted authorities.
A sheriff's deputy broke in trying to save the dogs.
Three were already dead, but a two-year old female was rescued and is now being treated by animal control officers.
"The windows were cracked about an inch open, but that doesn't give it anywhere near enough circulation in those conditions,” Dave Dickinson, director of Sacramento County Animal Control, said. “It's just not possible for those dogs to survive something like that."
The suspect, 34-year-old Trevor Courtney, is facing animal endangerment charges and could also lose the right to own dogs for 10 years if found guilty.
