Tournament of the Stars shooting hoops for scholarships

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The 20th Annual Tournament of the Stars brought out some big names this weekend to help raise money on the basketball court for student scholarships. This year the 38 teams consisted of college athletes, former NBA pros, and overseas players.
"I just came here to have fun with some of my hometown friends that I play pro basketball with... I'm just here to have fun," said Jcovan Brown, pro basketball player in Russia.

"I just want to have a good time and just enjoy myself with some of my friends from back home," said Kenny Demouchet, pro basketball player in Italy.

"We've been participating for the last 10 years now, and we just love doing this. It's something we do with the family, something we always come out together, look forward to, and God bless we here again this year," said Haary Chevalier, coach of defending champions.

It may have started out as a small operation, but Tournament of the Stars has grown to become the largest pro-am basketball tournament in the south.

"My father died in 1991 and he was the guy that always helped the kids, so I decided to honor him and do a scholarship. With that I had a purpose behind what I was doing," said Harold McReynolds, Founder and President of Tournament of the Stars.

Over the last 20 years they've managed to give away more than half a million dollars in scholarships.

"I think the athletes and crowds continue to support us because of the excitement. Yeah, we do have the NBA celebrities that come out, we do have musical guests that come out, but just from year to year it's just the excitement - the slam dunk and just all the excitement around the event. It's just a lot of fun," said Krystle Johnson, Tournament of the Stars board member.

The Tournament of the Stars wraps up Sunday, August 10.
