BAKER, LA (WAFB) - Police said a town official suspected of stealing a Moon Pie from a grocery store surrendered to authorities Thursday morning, the day after a warrant for his arrest was issued.
The Baker Police Department reported Councilman John Givens turned himself in around 7:30 a.m. He faces charges of simple theft and misusing his power. Givens was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. His bond was set at $1,000.
He is accused of stealing a banana cream Moon Pie from Ragusa’s Meat Market in Baker. Video surveillance from inside the store shows a man, whom the owner believes is Givens, eating a banana cream Moon Pie and putting the wrapper in his front pocket.
Owner Abdallah Ragusa said the man made no mention of the Moon Pie when he went up to the counter to pay for other items. Ragusa added when he asked the man if he was going to pay for the pie he had eaten in the store, the man got upset, pulled out a councilman badge and reportedly said, “You must not know who I am.”
Givens said he did pull out his badge to ask why he would steal as a councilman and that the incident is being blown out of proportion.
