BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A grand jury decided not to indict a man arrested on a charge of first-degree murder.

An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury returned a no true bill Wednesday against Dennaryo Lathers, 20, of Baton Rouge, in the murder of Octavia Jackson, 27, also of Baton Rouge. The victim was shot and killed in the parking lot of Club Shenanigans on Plank Road in 2013.

Lathers was arrested in April and has been held in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison since then. District Attorney Hillar Moore said new evidence in the case convinced the grand jury not to indict Lathers. No further details were given about the proceedings.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported the shooting happened outside Club Shenanigan’s on June 9, 2013 around 2 a.m. Investigators said Jackson was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle when she was shot multiple times. She was taken to a hospital where she later died from her injuries. A second person was also shot but those injuries were not life-threatening.

It was initially believed the shooting stemmed from an incident that happened inside the club earlier that night.
