LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) -  Livingston parish students are heading back to school Thursday and 2,500 students will have the supplies they need thanks to the Assess the Need program. This is the 14th year the parish has taken part in the school supply drive collecting thousands of dollars in donations.

On Wednesday,  school officials came to pick up their supplies for students in need.

Assessor Jeff Taylor said the program has collected more than $500,000 in donations and supplies since its inception.

"Education benefits your community and when a child goes to school and they don't have the supplies they need it creates a problem,” Tax Assessor Jeff Taylor says.  "But if they have everything they will need the first day when they walk in they will move to the front of the class. They will work hard and they will want to succeed and we give them to tools to do that. "

There is no application process.  School counselors and teachers take a look at what they need at their schools and provide the list to Assess the Need volunteers.
