GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Students in Ascension Parish headed back to school on Wednesday and at Pecan Grove Primary School in Gonzales, teachers have been waiting for this day for weeks.

"I get to teach the same group of children,” said Samantha Romeo, a fourth grade math teacher. “I taught them in third grade, so I'm just looking forward to already knowing my children. We get to start on day one and I know their behavior, I know what they're strong and weak at, so I'm just jumping in and their smiling faces is what I'm looking forward to."

New this year at Pecan Grove are a number of organizations and programs to help enrich the learning environment for students. Some of those programs include Math-letes, Follow Me Field Trips, the Prime Time Family Reading program and the Young Men of Character program.

"I'm super excited to start the school year," said Jennifer Rudy, a first grade teacher. "I've been here since the day we opened, so I've seen amazing growth since day one and I can't wait to see the leaps and bounds of growth this year."

Principal Marjorie Meyers is this year's Louisiana Elementary Principal of the Year. She said her goal is getting the school to an "A" ranking and believes students this year can do that.

"I just want kids to come to school, be excited and be ready to work hard," Meyers said.
