DEARBORN COUNTY, IN (FOX19) -

In one school in Indiana, students are getting prepared for more than just tough homework assignments as they head back to school.

They're also getting a unique drug abuse education.

Students at Sunman Dearborn Intermediate School, who head back Wednesday, had an open house Monday where their parents were offered take home drug tests while they were there.

"Research tells us, by age 13 and 14, they've already been approached about drugs.  We've got to get them before they're approached, before it's cool," said Linda Hutchinson of Bright Christian Church.

But, the students are even younger than that.  They're just 10 to 12 years old, headed to fifth and sixth grade.

"We have got to think differently.  We've got to think outside the box.  The things we've been doing, they're not working," said Hutchinson.

Thinking outside the box has the school offering parents the free home drug tests.

"It gives the parents an opportunity to hold their children accountable.  But, it also gives the kids a way to say, 'I can't do this because I'm going to get caught,'" said Joe Kisor, Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Dearborn and Ohio Counties, who deals with juvenile-related drug abuse cases weekly.

"I would have never thought about that as a 10-year old.  I'm 44, and 10 years ago, I never would have imagined that anything like this would be happening even when I was this age.  Oh, my gosh," said parent Dawn Burke.

Burke has a child starting at the school this year, and another at the middle school, as well as a younger child.

"It's kind of scary that Will and Wade might be doing stuff like that, but I guess better safe than sorry.  I think it's a good idea," Burke said.

Another parent, Teresa Schuler, and her family are involved in their church, sports and other activities with their kids.  They declined to take one of the tests, relying on their parenting to keep their kids drug-free.

"Parents are the example to your children.  You are the example.  The way you act is what your kid looks at," Schuler told FOX19

This is the second year these drug testing kits were handed out to parents at Sunman Dearborn Intermediate School.

It's an initiative called "Protect Your Family" and is put on by the school's Parent Teacher Organization, and funded by Citizens Against Substance Abuse, or CASA.

Parents of children at Sunman Dearborn Middle School will have a chance to get one of the kits Tuesday night at the school's open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
