ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH (WAFB) - It happened around 2:30 a.m. Monday on I-10 east near mile marker 205 in St. John the Baptist Parish.
Troopers with State Police say 24-year-old Jacob Sellars of Sorrento, LA was driving when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the left guard rail, crossed two lanes of traffic and struck the right guard rail, rotated numerous times and stopped in the left lane where it hit another vehicle. During the crash, the passenger of Sellars' vehicle was ejected.
The unidentified passenger was then struck by a third, unknown vehicle that did not stop.
Troopers questioned Sellars about his passenger, but was "very uncooperative and refused to give Troopers any information" regarding the his passenger's identity.
"Sellars was cooperative with Troopers in every other part of the investigation, but he would not tell them who the passenger was," said Trooper Melissa Matey, Troop B Louisiana State Police.
Sellars had minor injuries from the crash, but refused treatment. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.
Troopers say Sellars was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and suspect he was impaired, but no detectable alcohol was found in his system. Blood was taken and will be analyzed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
Sellars was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, reckless operation, no seat belt and suspended drivers license. Troopers say speed is also considered a factor in the crash.
Troopers are asking for the public's assistance in identifying the unknown vehicle that struck the unidentified passenger. If anyone was in the area and witnessed the crash, or has possible information about the passenger, please contact Troop B at 504-471-2775.
