BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - LSU safety Jalen Mills was formally charged Monday with simple battery --the same day he showed up for the Tigers first practice of the year. The charge is a misdemeanor. Mills is accused of punching a woman in the face. He was arrested on June 11 on a charge of second-degree battery. The battery charge led to him being suspended indefinitely from the team.

"Technically, my office has not reduced any charges," East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said. "This is the charge that we believe is appropriate after reviewing the evidence and reports. It is what the law calls for under these circumstances and facts. The police made an arrest of second-degree battery. That was an arrest charge only and not a formal charge by our office. That arrest charge served to only set a bond."

According to the probable cause report, a woman claimed Mills punched her in the mouth at his apartment complex on Highland Road on May 4, 2014. The report stated that she added "she fell to the pavement and was briefly unconscious."

The victim reportedly suffered a cut on her lip that required four stitches. The report also stated a witness gave the same account as the victim.

According to the probable cause report, the victim said she was at the apartment complex and knocked on Mills' door because she was looking for her friend. It stated Mills confronted the woman and closed the door in her face.

It added she knocked again, but when no one answered, she walked away. The report went on to state that the woman claimed she heard someone say something and when she turned around, she was punched in the mouth.

Coach Les Miles says he will let the justice system take its course.
