Driver dead after semi crashes into Tony Packo's

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The driver of a semi is dead after his truck crashed into Tony Packo's Cafe on Front and Consaul in east Toledo around 7:15 Friday morning, according to Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld of the Toledo Fire Department.

Lt. Hertzfeld says CPR was performed on the driver before he was taken to the hospital. The Lucas County Coroner's Office says John Altman of Holgate, Ohio was driving the truck.

"It appears that as the driver was traveling eastbound on Front this morning...some sort of medical emergency occurred," explained TPD Sgt. Kevin Braun. "The driver then veered off to the right and struck the Tony Packo's restaurant."

The truck has been removed from the scene, but engineers had to be present to make sure they were able to get the cab out without causing the building to collapse.

"Whenever a vehicle or anything large strikes a building, there's concerns," said Sgt. Braun. "But [the engineers] are sharp people. They'll make sure that we get that semi out of there without causing any further damage to the building."

Witnesses say they tried to help the driver before fire crews arrived.

"I tried to help him – went over there right away. Poor guy was knocked out right away. It was so sad," said Maggie Fox.

"We were saying ‘hey, buddy – you alright? You alright?' and he wasn't responding to nothing," said another man on the scene at the time of the crash.

When firefighters and paramedics got to the scene, Lt. Hertzfeld says it took about 20 minutes to get him out of the truck. Firefighters performed CPR on Altman at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Owner Tony Packo says there is broken glass in the bar area of the restaurant. No one was inside at the time of the crash. Packo says none of the famous buns signed by celebrities were damaged.

Health inspectors have given the restaurant the OK to reopen once the damage is repaired. Tony Packo's issued a statement saying they expect to reopen on Saturday, Aug. 2.

"We want to express our condolences to the family of the truck driver, and we are grateful that no one else was injured," said Scott Radel, VP Operations & Human Resources at Bennett Management Corporation. "Our first priority is for our customers and team members' safety. We tentatively plan to re-open for normal business hours Saturday August 2, 2014."
