LIVINGSTON, LA (WAFB) - Southern Aggregates LLC, a company which is trying to dig a gravel pit right behind people's homes in Watson, La, has several projects in the area. Lynn Dupre lives directly behind one of those sites. She explained that she hears loud noises coming from the pit starting at 6am, and said the mess it makes is also a problem.
"The dust is unbearable," said Dupre. "There is dust in the house. Dust is on the cars, dust is everywhere."
The company is trying to put a new site behind homes in the Oak Hills sub-division. Dupre believes if the company has its way people in that neighborhood will have the same fate as her.
Company owner Kevin Black issued out a statement:
"We have been operating on this site since January 2012 and this is the first I have heard of Ms Dupre's concerns. Southern Aggregates is operating well within the noise limits established by Livingston Parish. Southern Aggregates dust control measures are in accordance with DEQ specifications. Based on our willingness to work with the community, we changed our dredge operating hours to 6a-6pm over a year ago."
Livingston Parish Councilman Jim Norred, who lives in Oak Hills, said after visiting Dupre's home he is even more ready to stop something like this from happening.
"I'm floored," said Norred "We can't have this anymore in Livingston Parish. We've got to put an end to this," he continued.
Southern Aggregates will still have to receive a permit from the US-Army Core of Engineers before building a new site. People have started a petition to fight it.
