BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Salvation Army of Greater Baton Rouge is pledging to help the community's children prepare for the upcoming school year by providing backpacks filled with school supplies.
"We want to assist at least 500 children off the top this year,” said Capt. Brett Meredith. “We've done this on a much smaller scale in the past and next year, we want to double that."
Organizers had already stuffed 300 bags by Wednesday morning and are increasing that number to meet the community's needs.
"We're looking for the opportunities to serve. It's important to assist those that have need and finding that need and connect people to the resources, rather through the Salvation Army or through other agencies in the community," Meredith added.
The Salvation Army is planning a community distribution event on Saturday, August 16 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at its location on Airline Highway.
