BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Firefighters were called out to a house fire early Monday morning that investigators determined was caused by an electrical short.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported it happened at a home on McGrath Avenue just before 2:30 a.m. McGrath is off St. Rose, which is off Government Street.

Firefighters said the homeowner was awakened by the smoke and ran out the back door to safely escape the fire.

Firemen reported they arrived at the home to find flames shooting out a front window. They said the fire was under control six minutes after arrival.

Investigators said the fire appears to have started around the air conditioning unit located in the front room.

Mark Miles with BRFD said the home suffered lots of fire and smoke damage.
