LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) -  The 14th annual Assess the Need campaign began on Saturday in Livingston Parish.

Parish Assessor Jeff Taylor sponsors the drive which gathers school supplies throughout the parish for kids in need.  School leaders say the campaign is very important because they estimate 10% of students in the parish will start school without the necessary supplies.

Taylor says it is important for everyone to get the chance to start fresh this school year.

“They didn't have the one thing that was really important when they started back to school. That first day when they go back to school, having they supplies that they needed, instead of having to say 'No, I don't have' they can say 'Yes, I have',” said Taylor. “And, it makes for a very good start to school, you know how it is when you first start back to school, everything is fresh and new and so they get the same chance as everybody else.”

Donations are being collected at the Wal-Marts in Walker and Denham Springs until 8 p.m. There is also another collection date on Saturday, August 2nd.
