Man indicted for using dead children's identities to file false tax returns

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A Cincinnati man was indicted by a grand jury for using the identities of dead children to file false income tax returns and claim tax refunds.

According to the indictment, Christopher K. Smith, 28, obtained the names and social security numbers of primarily deceased children and used the information to file false tax returns. He listed children as dependents or taxpayers in the returns.

Smith's false claims add up to more than $16,000.

The indictment charges Smith with four counts of wire fraud, and five counts of aggravated identity theft. Each count of wire fraud alone is punishable by up to 20 years of prison.
