Soccer tournament gives Baton Rouge hotels revenue boost

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge officials reported the regional youth soccer tournament created a huge boost in revenue for area hotels.

According to figures tracked by lodging industry firm STR, hotels saw an average surge of more than 41 percent over the same time period last year.

Visit Baton Rouge said the numbers from STR showed hotels in Baton Rouge collected $6.7 million from June 19 through June 26. Those hotels only pulled in $4.8 million on those days in 2013, according to reports.

"The tournament was the perfect book-end to the success of this year's Bayou Country Superfest and the Miss USA pageant," said Paul Arrigo, president and CEO of Visit Baton Rouge. "We knocked a homerun every time."

Arrigo thanked all of the people involved, including the city-parish of East Baton Rouge, BREC, the Louisiana Soccer Association and the volunteers and staff of the Baton Rouge Soccer Club.

The 2014 US Youth Soccer Region III Championships were held at the Burbank Soccer Complex. Thousands of players, fans and families from 11 Southern states attended the championships.
