Livingston Deputies: 'Lock your doors'

Deputies in Livingston Parish telling residents to lock doors after number of burglaries

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Deputies in Livingston Parish are warning residents to lock their vehicles. This is after the Forest Ridge and Westminster Estates subdivisions in Denham Springs, had 36 cars broken into. Liz Fasbender was on edge after learning her husband's car was one of the cars hit.

"It was very overwhelming to wake up and find out that something that you own and paid a lot of money for, could be rummaged through by someone else," said Fasbender.

Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard said investigators learned that the doors on all of those cars were left unlocked. Ard said it's an invitation for what he calls car surfing.

"You'll have a group of kids that will go through these neighborhoods, looking for unlocked cars," said Ard "They will drop two or three people of and will search car to car."

Sherif Ard says do not make it easy for thieves to steal any valuables left inside. Ard said he understands that people have fast lifestyles, but there are ways to avoid becoming a victim.

"Always lock your vehicle, and keep your valuables out of sight," Ard explained. "I've been a victim. I know what's it's like to leave your vehicle unlocked. You just get busy and forget things," he continued.
