St. George incorporation effort looks to December for issue to go before voters

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The St. George movement to incorporate will not be placed on the November ballot after organizers failed to reach the number of signatures required to put the issue before voters.

Organizers said early last week that they had about 17,000 of the required 18,000 signatures needed for it to appear on the ballot. Lionel Rainey III said Wednesday morning it is believed volunteers likely collected about 200 more signatures over the past week.

He added he predicts they will have about 17,300 signatures once they are all tallied, which probably won't be until Sunday.

Officials have decided they will not turn in the list of signatures Wednesday, which is the deadline for placement on the November ballot. The effort will have until October to collect the number of signatures necessary to place the issue on the December ballot.
