BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -  A house fire claimed the life of a 90-year-old man Saturday and left his 87-year-old wife hospitalized.

Investigators with the Baton Rouge Fire Department say it happened on Bay Street, just north of I-110 behind Memorial Stadium around 8 p.m.

A spokesman for the department said neighbors tried knocking on the door to alert the residents, and informed firefighters that there were people in the home. Firefighters kicked in the door and found the elderly woman in the front room watching television. She asked to be rescued and was carried out of the house.

Her husband was found unconscious in a rear bedroom where investigators believe the fire started. The flames were contained to that room. Firefighters removed him from the home and attempted CPR, but he could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was ruled accidental, and the cause is believed to be electrical.
