BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Baton Rouge woman celebrated her 106th birthday in Baton Rouge Friday. She was surrounded by her family and friends and she had a lot of advice to give.
A representative from the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging was with Norma Jean and her family members on Yazoo Street.
She says she feels good. "And I thank God for it. He woke me up this morning, shook me, told me to get up - cause this is the last one." When asked what advice she would like to give, she says she prays a lot. "I think about everybody. I just want everybody to be like my, but I know they can't be."
She goes on to talk about how she is disappointed in the young people these days. "these folks are beating up people, and killing folks. I don't do that," she said.
She teared up when she spoke of her family and those who are no longer here. She really got excited when they brought out her cake and she blew out the candles.
Norma Jean wants people to pray and do what God tells you to do. She told us she had a wonderful husband, but he had to go. "His name was Bruce Sykes."
We would like to wish Norma Jean Sykes a very happy birthday!
