Benton Elementary Archery team returns home International Champs

BENTON, LA (KSLA) - Benton Elementary clinched the title of Elementary World Champions over the weekend at the 2014 National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) World Tournament held in Madison, Wis.

A celebration was held inside the Benton Elementary gym for the group Thursday.  The team of fourth and fifth graders competed against thousands of the best archers across the globe, including archers from Africa, England, Canada and Mexico.

Benton Elementary is the only school in the state to ever make it to the World Championship.

"The competition up there was great. Every kid at the world tournament can shoot," Benton archery coach Perry Norcross said. "Every team is so well-coached.  I don't think they quite grasp what they have done."

Third grade archer Bryce Hughes expressed his excitement at the celebration.

"Feels pretty good as a third grader and the only third grader in our school and Bossier Parish. It feels pretty good," he said. "I was a little nervous at the beginning but it was OK."
