VERDUNVILLE, LA (WAFB) - Two men were arrested on drug charges after leading authorities on a chase Wednesday evening, according to investigators.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office reported Jamarcus Gunner, 20, of Verdunville, and Derrick Kelly, 19, of Franklin, both face drug possession and other charges.
Traci Landry, a spokeswoman for SMPSO, said narcotics detectives tried to pull over a car on US 90 in the Patterson area after they saw it go across the center line. She reported instead of stopping, the driver fled and deputies followed.
Detectives said the car, which was later determined to be driven by Kelly, was going at a high rate of speed and ran other vehicles off the road. They added the car also passed close to people standing in the street in Verdunville.
Deputies said the passenger, later identified as Gunner, jumped out of the car, threw several bags of synthetic marijuana into the back seat and ran off. He was quickly caught. Deputies also detained Kelly and a second passenger.
Landry reported detectives were given consent to search the car and found a few bags of synthetic marijuana with a street value of about $2,000, a small bag of marijuana, a digital scale and small plastic bags.
Gunner was booked on charges of possession of synthetic cannabinoids with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstruction of justice and resisting an officer.
Kelly faces charges of possession of marijuana, aggravated flight from an officer and improper lane usage.
No bond was set. The second passenger was released with no charges filed.
