PORTOLA VALLEY, CA (KPIX/CBS) - If you've ever wanted to own your own tank, Saturday was your chance.

More than 100 of them were up for auction, and people came from all over the world to get in on the sale.

Randy Beard made one of the winning bids, and he plans to take his vehicle back home to Colorado to ride around the desert.

"I'll restore it," Beard said. "Everyone should own one. It's a sexy little vehicle."

Over the years, Jacques Littlefield used a family fortune to buy this military memorabilia.

The collection grew on his Portola Valley estate, but Littlefield died in 2009 and his tanks needed a new home.

"These vehicles with the brave men who fought in them helped to liberate Europe, helped defend our freedom," said Rob Collings, executive director of the Collings Foundation. "They made the world what it is today. How often do you get a chance to own something that is that important to history?"

Jessie Abalos helped restore many of the machines, and they are priceless to him.

"It's a sad situation, but I'm happy they are going to a good place," Abalos said.

Money raised at the auction will go toward a museum in Massachusetts that will house the rest of the military collection.
