(CBS) - Israel continued its bombardment on Friday of the Gaza Strip in an offensive against the Hamas militant group with more than 900 targets attacked so far.

From the Israeli side of the borer smoke was seen rising from buildings in the distance as Gaza militants responded with artillery fire.

A weapon hit the ground on Israel's side of the border.

In the meantime, Israeli tanks were gathering at the southern Israeli border with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

The number of dead in Gaza has topped 85.

Gaza militants already have fired more than 550 rockets against Israel in the four-day offensive.

Israel's "Iron Dome" defense system has intercepted most of those aimed at major cities but some have slipped through.

Elsewhere on Friday, rockets fired from Lebanon struck Israel early in the morning, the Israeli military said, and added that the rocket fire struck near Israel's northern border. The military responded with artillery fire toward the apparent source in southern Lebanon.

There were no reports of injuries.
