BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The secretary of the Louisiana Department of Veteran Affairs explained what he would do if he were the new national VA secretary.

David Lacerte addressed the Baton Rouge Press Club on Monday.

"I'd encourage the new VA secretary to establish transparent lines of communication with veterans, elected officials and the public at large,” Lacerte said. “Realistically acknowledging that the trust has been broken and making a genuine effort to regain that trust is key to any forward movement that the VA will be able to make."

Lacerte added that while many states have had to shut down war veterans homes over the last few years, Louisiana's long-term care facilities have been thriving.

President Barack Obama announced Bob McDonald last week as his choice for national VA secretary.
