MARINGOUIN, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police said a man was killed in a single-vehicle crash when he was thrown from the truck he was driving after it went off the road and hit a tree Monday morning.
The victim was identified as Izel Givens, 56, of Maringouin. Troopers said the crash happened on LA 977 south of LA 77 in Pointe Coupee Parish around 11:30 a.m. They added Givens was not properly buckled up at the time of the wreck.
Tpr. Jared Sandifer with LSP reported the initial investigation showed Givens was driving a 1997 Ford F-250 south on LA 977. He said it is unknown why the pickup drifted into the opposite lane, but after it did, Givens overcorrected and the truck went off the road and slammed into a tree.
Sandifer said the impact caused Givens to be ejected from the vehicle and he died at the scene from his injuries. Sandifer added investigators don't believe Givens was impaired, but as is procedure with all deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, a sample of his blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for a toxicology analysis.
The investigation into the deadly accident is ongoing.
