NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

New Orleans police responded to four shootings overnight, including one that was fatal and one that took place in the French Quarter.

The fatal shooting was reported at about 2:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of Monroe Street near Belfast. Police said an unidentified 18-year-old man was found shot multiple times in the rear yard of an abandoned house. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The French Quarter shooting happened at 3 a.m. at Decatur and Toulouse streets, where an 18-year-old man was shot in the hand. Police said he was stopped in traffic when someone approached and opened fire. He is hospitalized in stable condition. Police recovered at least three casings at the scene, and a bullet hole was visible in the wall of a nearby restaurant.

A third shooting happened a few minutes after 1 a.m. in the 4400 block of Laine Avenue, where a 14-year-old was playing basketball in the driveway. Subjects drove up in a black vehicle and opened fire.

A fourth shooting occurred at 2 a.m. in the 7700 block of Chef Menteur Highway. The 45-year-old victim and unknown male had a verbal argument, and the man returned with a gun and shot the victim.

The French Quarter shooting comes at the end of a big weekend for the area, with tens of thousands of people in for Essence Fest and the Fourth of July. One week ago, 10 people were shot and one died after a shooting in the 700 block of Bourbon Street.

Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas promised a heavy police presence in the area for the weekend. He said 500 officers would be working downtown along with troopers from Louisiana State Police.
