Troopers: Driver dies after van goes off road and hits trees

CLINTON, LA (WAFB) - Authorities are investigating what caused a deadly single-vehicle crash in which a van went off the road and hit some trees late Sunday night.

Louisiana State Police reported the wreck claimed the life of Jo Ann Ryals, 66, of Jackson. Troopers said the accident happened on LA 10 west of LA 961 near Clinton around 10:30 p.m.

LSP said the initial investigation showed Ryals was driving a 2005 Nissan Quest westbound on LA 10 when the van veered off the right side of the road. Officials said she then overcorrected, crossed over both lanes and went off the left side of the road. They added the van then hit several trees and a culvert.

According to investigators, Ryals was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. They said she died at the scene. They do not believe she was impaired, but as procedure with deadly wrecks, a sample of her blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for a toxicology analysis.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
