BROCKTON, MA (WCVB/CNN) – A 16-year-old is being credited for his quick thinking when a police chase ended in the Woodman family's yard on Friday.

LeRoy Woodman IV heard the screech of tires and raced outside.

"I came out onto the porch, and I saw that there was a car in the yard,” he said. “So I asked the man if he was OK, but at that point he was starting to get out of the car. I saw that he had a gun in his hand, and he was running into the backyard."

The backyard is where Woodman's little sister Kayla was jumping on a trampoline with a group of her friends over for a sleepover.

"I was actually pretty scared," Emily Philbin, LeRoy Woodman IV’s girlfriend, said. She watched in horror as the gunman sprinted by, police on his heels.

"And I saw a police officer pointing a gun at him, and I said, ‘Oh my God, this is serious,’" she said.

Worried about what might happen next, the 16-year-old quickly rushed all the girls inside and had them lock themselves in a bedroom.

Meanwhile, police chased the man into the woods behind the house, where they quickly cornered him and retrieved the weapon he'd thrown aside.

Police have identified the suspect as Luis D. Garcia. He was taken to a Brockton hospital to be checked out.

LeRoy Woodman III, a Brockton firefighter, knows this bizarre ordeal could have ended differently. He's grateful for the quick actions of police and the quick thinking of his son.

"He's always proven himself responsible. And he really came through today," LeRoy Woodman III said.
