BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - State Farm is lending a hand in the fight against arsons. The insurance company has donated an arson dog named Billy to the State Fire Marshal's Office.
Bill and his arson investigating partner, Deputy Roman Ray, just completed training with a nationally recognized arson investigation program.
Billy showed off the skills Thursday that make him such a valuable member of the crime fighting team.
"Unfortunately arson is one of the hardest crimes to not only prove but to secure a remedy on, to secure an arrest on, and to secure a conviction on," said State Fire Marshal Butch Browning. "So we have to be ahead of the curve. We have to have technology. We have to have scientific methods so we can outsmart the people who are setting fires in the state."
Billy spent five weeks learning how to detect accelerants used in arsons.
